We recognise that good high streets, like good retailers, are constantly adapting. Forever changing and ever-expanding, they are the heart of any British town’s shopping district and provide customers with a bustling destination to enjoy a little retail therapy.
Stockton Council is committed and prepared to developing our High Street to secure its future for our residents and businesses.
These improvements will see the street transformed with open spaces, new car parks and a growing number and variety of shops.
The first phase started at the South End of the High Street on Monday 24 September 2012 and was completed early summer 2013. There are now 5 further phases with the whole project expected to be complete in early 2015.
We’ll make sure access to shops is maintained at all times with at least a 3 metre walkway available, with noise, dust and disruption are kept to a minimum. The businesses still need you to come and shop in the High Street so why not combine your journey and take a peek through our open fencing to see what we’re up to?
Three further phases will follow providing a focal point in the central area incorporating seating, grass and a stylish water feature as well as a dedicated space for the regular market, an automaton, and a flexible space for events and specialist markets. We’re also creating a dedicated walkway to connect the riverside and the end of the High Street, along with new spaces to sit, relax and play. We recognise that good high streets, like good retailers, are constantly adapting. Forever changing and ever-expanding, they are the heart of any British town’s shopping district and provide customers with a bustling destination to enjoy a little retail therapy.
